I'm Sure You'll All Agree

Why Frank Kelly Freas was possibly the greatest science fiction artist who ever lived

I love his stuff, and he illustrated stories and often covers in most of the issues of ASTOUNDING I read between '55 and '70 or so. Wonderful stuff.

Definitely one of my favorites.

Certainly one of the best for a long time. I wish that Ron Miller had included more of Kelly Freas's work with the article, particularly his drawings.

BTW, I took a quick look at the Kelly Freas website given in the article. The Dune covers listed as being by Kelly Freas were definitely the work of John Schoenherr.

That's an oddity. Those John Schoenherr covers are famously his work and don't look like anything by Freas.

I'd pick Finlay.

Back in my youth, Freas, Finlay, and Emsh were my favorites. Powers was good, too, and Mel Hunter. Speaking only of SF here, of course.

My faves were Powers, Emsh and Finlay. Freas did a few extraordinary pieces but over all the coyness (he tried for irony I think) put me off. Emsh numero uno I guess.
