Why do I feel like believing in this is like clapping for Tinkerbelle?

Be that as it may, I still want to believe.

Arthur C. Clarke predicted a "space tower" like this back in the 1950s, John Scalzi uses it in his Old Man's War books, as have some other SF authors. The difference here is the physics and the materials. The earth's rotation should bend this thing in such a way it would collapse, but if they ever really do it, we'll see.

I don't remember Clarke's, but I do remember Scalzi's. I really hope they try to do this one.
