Here is your NYC top 10 of 7/28/65:

1 1 (I Can’t Get No) SATISFACTION - The Rolling Stones
2 5 WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT? - Tom Jones
3 2 I’M A HAPPY MAN - The Jive Five
4 4 I CAN’T HELP MYSELF - The Four Tops
5 18 I GOT YOU BABE - Sonny & Cher
6 3 CARA, MIA - Jay & The Americans
7 12 IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR - Wilson Pickett
8 21 IT’S THE SAME OLD SONG - The Four Tops
9 6 I’M HENRY VIII, I AM - Herman’s Hermits
10 7 SAVE YOUR HEART FOR ME - Gary Lewis & The Playboys

There was a lot of big movement that week:

Nothing But Heartaches, last week's Sure Shot, jumped all the way to #11, Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (pt. 1) by James Brown from 20 to 12, All I Really Want to Do by The Byrds from 22 to 13, Help! by The Beatles from 36 to 14, The Tracks of My Tears by The Miracles from 34 to 15, I Like It Like That by The Dave Clark Five from 30 to 16, California Girls by The Beach Boys from 43 to 18.

I miss the old days.

Nothing But Heartaches by The Supremes, for you whippersnappers.

Some really great stuff on that list.

Slightly related: my husband's car has satellite radio and I was listening to the sixties channel on Saturday. The program was hosted by Peter Noone (aka, Herman) and he said Herman's Hermits did the original version of "For Your Love" which they then "gave" to the Yardbirds. Just as well, he played the HH version and it wasn't very good.

I'll have to look for the HH version. I saw Herman in concert a few years ago, and it was great. Very different takes on everything, with a much better band and an edgier approach.

Sounds like it's being played on toy instruments (or perhaps it's just the comparison to the Yardbirds' definitive version):

Despite his claims, The song was later recorded by Herman's Hermits.....

This seems definitive.

Well, on the show he claimed they "had" it first because their manager's wife was somehow related to the guy who wrote the song (who also wrote several other songs such as "Bus Stop"). Perhaps they passed on it which allowed the Yardbirds to make their definitive recording. Or perhaps Peter is misremembering!
