This novel was the start of many fine detective stories featuring LA PI Brock Callahan.

When I was reading him back in the day his books usually billed him as William Campbell Gault. Read a bunch of his stuff and liked it.

The paperback publishers used the "Bill Gault" name to make him sound tougher, I think. What a great guy he was, and plenty tough.
