It's San Jacinto Day!

The Battle of San Jacinto - Apr 21, 1836: During the Texan War for Independence, the Texas militia under Sam Houston launches a surprise attack against the forces of Mexican General Santa Anna along the San Jacinto River. The Mexicans were thoroughly routed, and hundreds were taken prisoner, including General Santa Anna himself.

My connection is to Alfonso Steele, who, when he died, was the last known survivor of the battle. It's a "by marriage" connection, so it's tenuous. Steele was 19 years in 1836 and was shot through the chest but survived to live a long life. My great grandmother's brother (Tillman) was married to one of his grand daughters (Alice). The story is told that Sam Houston rode Alfonso's horse after his gray dapple and then a bay colored horse were shot from under him. Unfortunately, there's no documentation of this. Alfonso Steele settled in Limestone County, where my hometown is, in 1844.
