Powells's here in Portland gets several mentions and I agree, it's the best we have here (three locations, each different) for both new and especially used.

I was surprised how many people named Books of Wonder, a children's bookstore near Union Square. I've never been there. Jackie taught the kid (not a kid any more) who is the manager of Book Court in downtown Brooklyn, owned by his parents. She ordered a lot of books from there when she was teaching. Of course I loved Powell's on our one visit to Portland. And of course I've been to the mentioned stores in London.

I'd also recommend MY BOOKSTORE: WRITERS CELEBRATE THEIR FAVORITE PLACES TO BROWSE, READ, AND SHOP, edited by Ronald Race.

I was glad to see Megan Abbott's plug for Murder by the Book, which is my favorite, too.

Well, my favorite bookstore (Jim Huang's Mystery Company) closed a few years back. My wife and I did our damnedest to keep it open, but it wasn't enough.
